Person killed in tree-felling accident near Baynes Lake

Elk Valley RCMP is investigating a tree-felling accident that left one person dead south of Baynes Lake.

Officials said Police, the Elko Fire Department, the BC Ambulance Service and Fernie Search and Rescue were dispatched just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday to an area east of Waldo Road.

First responders were investigating a report of two friends who were cutting firewood for the winter when a tragic accident happened.

Police officials said the two friends were cutting two trees separately, one hit the other as it fell, causing one of the trees to fall on the victim, causing severe injuries.

The BCAS and police eventually found the pair after some time due to poor reception and incomplete GPS location data.

Police said the injuries caused by the falling tree resulted in the person’s death.

“Fernie Search and Rescue attended the location to assist BC Ambulance with the removal of the remains due to the remote location, while Police supported the friend and his family to ensure their well-being,” said Elk Valley RCMP officials.

Police officials said they will continue to support the BC Coroners Service investigation.

“Elk Valley RCMP offer condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” said police.
