Suspected grenade found and safely disarmed in Sparwood

Elk Valley RCMP helped dispose of a suspected hand grenade that was turned in to police.

Police officials said a resident came into the Sparwood detachment on Friday to turn over some drug material and a suspected explosive device.

The items were found at an address along Juniper Crescent in Sparwood, while the complainant was cleaning the property after an eviction.

Elk Valley police officials said the provincial RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit arrived on the following day to remove and safely destroy the device.

“RCMP wish to remind the public that any suspected explosives or explosive devices they find should be left in place and the local RCMP detachment should be called immediately for assistance to evaluate the circumstances,” said Elk Valley RCMP officials.
