Columbia Valley RCMP, with the assistance of the Cranbrook RCMP Police Dog Service, recovered an abandoned vehicle in Kootenay National Park and stopped a fleeing suspect.
RCMP originally got a report of the abandoned vehicle last Tuesday, November 19, 2019, around 7:15 am. Investigating, RCMP located the vehicle on Highway 93 near Kootenay Park Lodge within Kootenay National Park.
“The vehicle had been stolen from Radium Hot Springs two weeks prior,” said Columbia Valley RCMP. “A set of footprints was located in the snow leading away from the stolen vehicle.”
The Cranbrook RCMP Police Dog Service was called in to assist. RCMP said they eventually locating the suspect, who attempted to flee police by crossing a creek, but eventually surrendered.
“The suspect was arrested without incident and held in cells.”
Columbia Valley RCMP said a 31-year-old man from Cochrane, Alberta has since been charged with possession of stolen property and two counts of breach of probation in connection to the incident.
