Excessive speeding leads to accident and arrest near Invermere

A man is facing multiple charges after he was caught speeding over twice the limit, resulting in an accident near Invermere.

Columbia Valley RCMP officials said a driver was spotted travelling south along Highway 93/95 at over twice the speed limit on Sept 5.

The driver did not stop for police and continued driving at high speeds, heading to Invermere.

Police officials said he was later seen travelling at about 150 kilometres per hour towards the Athalmer Road intersection.

The driver struck another vehicle and rolled multiple times before it came to a stop in the Black Forest restaurant parking lot.

“Police were on scene almost immediately, but in the ensuing chaos, the driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot,” said RCMP officials. “Police located the driver approximately one and a half hours later.”

Police arrested the 37-year-old man and charged him with multiple offences, including dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, obstruction, resisting arrest and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

The man is in custody and awaiting a court appearance.
