Search and Rescue respond to SOS device false alarm

Search and Rescue crews in the Elk Valley responded to the activation of a Garmin InReach personal locator beacon yesterday.

The search started in the Mt Broadwood area and then travelled through to Leach Ridge and Corbin.

It turned out to be a false alarm and the owner was unaware the device had activated.

SAR crews are reminding recreationists that the SOS “lock” does not stop unintended activations if pressure is placed on the outside of the case.

Devices should be in pockets on the top of packs and with nothing else around them that can apply pressure.
