Cranbrook RCMP warning of Apple computer scam

The Cranbrook RCMP has received multiple reports of scammers targeting people with Apple computers.

Police said people would get an alert on their computers claiming that there was a security breach and that they needed to contact “Apple” with a provided number.

The person who answers the number would ask the victim to send money either by holding up a check to the camera so they could take a photo of it or being granted remote access by the owners to log into banking information.

“We are asking people to be more mindful when sending money, gift cards, or allowing someone remote access to their computers,” said Cst. Katie Forgeron.

“Double and triple check that the person you are dealing with is a legitimate company representative”

The Cranbrook RCMP received two calls about that scam this week and another four other fraud-related calls.
