Columbia Valley fires continue to grow

Both the Horsethief and Yearling Creek fires have jumped up in size after days of dry conditions and heavy winds.

The Horsethief Creek blaze is now an estimated 1,975 hectares.

BC Wildfire Service officials said warmer-than-average temperatures, low humidity and clear skies also attributed to the growth.

“Aircraft will be supporting to deliver water to areas along both the Neave and Law drainages at higher elevations where it is unsafe for ground crews to operate on steep areas with poor access,” said BC Wildfire Service officials.

The Yearling Creek blaze has seen similar conditions and has grown to 1,749 Hectares.

Crews will be working on a 50-foot wet line along the Cross Forest Service Road on the fire’s west flank for the rest of the week.

This fire was discovered on July 9 and is believed to be lightning-caused as well.

All evacuation alerts and orders remain in place for both of these fires.
