Friday fire update for Kootenay blazes

The BC Wildfire Service is continuing to see promising fire behaviour as they fight local fires.

Crews have seen some growth on the Lladnar Creek fire by Sparwood, but growth downslope towards the community continues to be slow.

The fire was last mapped at 379.9 hectares.

It was sparked on July 21 by lightning.

The St. Mary River fire has grown a little bit due to some successful planned burns.

It’s now approximately 4,640 hectares.

Over in the Columbia Valley, the Horsethief and Yearling Creek fires continue to burn out of control.

The Horsethief Creek blaze was last mapped size was 1,020 hectares.

Crews have established machine guards along the Bruce FSR to Toby Creek.

The Yearling Creek fire is still an estimated 1,175 Hectares.

There is still some concern for all fires about dry lightning in the forecast which could also bring heavy winds.
