St. Mary wildfire seen spreading across Kootenay River

Firefighters are working to contain flames that have been spotted on the east side of the Kootenay River as the battle against the St. Mary wildfire continues.

BC Wildfire Service officials said crew members are working to keep the spreading fire held to the Bummers Flats area with help from air support, when visibility allows.

“The spot is between the CPKC rail line and the Kootenay River in wetlands. Crews and heavy equipment also worked overnight on the LD Ranch road and the work is ongoing today [Saturday],” said BC Wildfire Service officials.

As of Saturday morning, the fire has been mapped to 3,342 hectares, which may increase when mapping work can continue.

As heavy smoke has limited air support, crews are focusing on ground suppression for now.

“Small spot fires were noted on the east side of Kootenay River, these spots are being prioritized. Ground crews will remain in the area overnight to continue spot fire suppression,” said the BCWS.

Most of the fire’s recent growth has been on the northeast side.

“Control lines North of the airport have been holding, a unit crew will remain in this area overnight to patrol and monitor the line. CPKC (Formerly Canadian Pacific Rail) activated their wildfire train to support suppression activities and keep humidity increased. CPKC personnel were also monitoring for potential fire growth,” said the BCWS.

As if Saturday morning, five attack crews and four unit crews are taking on the blaze. The team is made up of 232 personnel, which includes BC Wildfire members, contract crews, single resources, 57 structure protection personnel and 16 pieces of heavy equipment.

“Structure protection and defence are maintaining a presence in all areas of potential concern and will remain a strong presence by working both day and night shifts,” said the BCWS.

All existing evacuation alerts and orders remain in place.
