Meanwhile, another 22-person BCWS crew arrived on Friday to help support containment efforts.

Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Service officials said structural protection teams have arrived from around B.C. to help around the community.

The fire has grown to about 2,600 hectares since it was sparked by downed power lines on Monday.

The rapid growth was aided by strong winds that swept through the area.

So far, seven homes in ʔaq̓am have been destroyed by the blaze.

All evacuation orders and alerts are still in effect.
