Police investigating viral Facebook post

The Cranbrook and Creston RCMP are investigating a Facebook post where an individual falsely claimed to light a local fire.

Police said the person in the video did not light the fire.

“The individual who is the source of the video turned himself into police today,” said Cst Katie Forgeron.

“We are still actively investigating but can confirm that the individuals in the video had nothing to do with starting the fire in the Ê”aq’am community.”

The St. Mary Wildfire was caused by downed power lines after heavy winds on Monday.

However, there may be other charges.

“Despite his not having committed the offence of arson, there are still possible criminal charges that can be pursued with relation to the post that was made,” she added.
