Wildfire risk reduction project to start near Wapiti Ski Hill

Crews will start wildfire risk reduction work near Elkford’s Wapiti Ski Hill this month, with operations expected to continue until late fall.

Mountain Resorts Branch Officials said the work will involve heavy equipment delimbing, bucking, mechanical raking, and loading.

“Large transport trucks will be utilized to remove debris from the site. Previous fuel mitigation efforts caused material to be left on site,” said officials. “The intent is to remove the debris accumulations from the site and have them used in a nearby mine reclamation project as opposed to pile burning.”

Residents and outdoor enthusiasts are asked to stay clear of any equipment and follow the directions of on-site signs and staff.
