The Whitecaps FC youth camp is underway in Cranbrook this week with new and experienced players putting their skills to the test.
“This is just a skills camp that the club puts on every season for different areas around the country,” said Kootenay East head coach Will Feria.
“Our goal is to bring soccer to a bunch of areas including Cranbrook and help the players locally to develop their skills, fall in love with the game and hopefully they fall in love with the Whitecaps as well.”
He said they are always keeping an eye out for kids with a lot of potential but the camp’s goal is to get kids more interested in soccer.
“My personal belief is that when you love something then naturally you’re going to get good at it in some ways,” Feria said.
“So I think early on if we can foster the love of the game and instill that in the kids early on then over the next few seasons we will definitely see some great players come out of the area.”
The skills camp is sold out and Feria said this has been a pattern across their regions.
“All of our Kootenay camps have been sold out, there’s been a really big boom across the nation,” he added.
“I know a lot of our camps in Calgray and Vancouver have been sold out as well. There’s a big buzz going on and I’m really happy to see it.”
The camp runs from July 10-14 at the College of the Rockies field.
