Cranbrook to begin week-long flushing operations

Cranbrook’s public works will begin a multi-day uni-directional water flushing program across a large part of the city on Sunday.

City officials said crews will be active overnight starting on July 9 and continuing until Friday, July 14.

“This flushing project is being conducted in the overnight hours between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. to reduce the impact of any cloudy, or discoloured water on local businesses, especially restaurants and hotels,” said city officials.

The job will impact Van Horne Street to 13th Avenue South from 2nd Street South to Baker Street and from Van Horne Street at 10th Avenue South along the length of Highway 3/Cranbrook Street north to Denham Ford.

Businesses and residents may see some cloudy or discoloured water in the mornings after the flushing work is complete.

“It is important to know that this discolouration is not a public health concern,” said city staff. “If you find your water is cloudy, please simply run your cold water tap until the water runs clear.”

Officials said uni-directional flushing operations are important to a number of issues with the city’s potable water system.

“Through a series of planned valve openings and closures, our crew can move water in a single direction at high velocities,” said city staff. “This high-velocity scouring of the water main removes sediment, scale, and biofilm, which improves water quality and lowers chlorine demand.”
