Wildlife overpass crucial for Columbia Valley bighorn sheep population

Construction on a wildlife overpass should begin soon and it will be important for animals in the Columbia Valley but especially the bighorn sheep population.

Radium Hot Springs mayor Mike Gray said construction should start soon.

“The Ministry of Transportation has been excellent for organizing everything and making sure they are ready,” he said.

“Once they get the final approval we are hoping for an announcement very quickly that they’re going to get the project going.”

Mitigation efforts have been used to try to reduce the number of bighorn sheep deaths in the area, but none seemed to be very effective.

Gray believes a wildlife overpass will be a big help.

“We think the impact for wildlife will be the best kind of impact for wildlife because unfortunately far too many have been the wrong kind of impact and it’s dangerous both for of course the wildlife, but also for drivers.”

There’s been no set date for construction to begin, but the design phase is nearing completion.
