Elkford set for new childcare facility opening

The Elkford Childcare Centre is having its grand opening event this Wednesday.

Work on the facility has been underway for a while now. It was originally supposed to be finished by the end of 2022 but was delayed during the pandemic.

Elkford mayor Steve Fairbairn is excited about what the childcare facility will bring to the community.

“This Centre and Hub is such an incredible asset for Elkford,” said Fairbairn. “This project is also an excellent example of repurposing assets and more importantly, an example of how much can be accomplished when a few great organizations collectively strive toward a common goal. Thanks to the generosity and combined efforts of these organizations, Elkford will have stable and affordable child care in place for many years to come.”

The facility was built within the old municipal offices.

It’s expected to help working parents in the area.

“The centre will be a game-changer for families who want to work outside the home but were facing challenges with the lack of available daycare in Elkford,” adds Mayor Fairbairn.

The district received approximately $2,080,000 in funding, including a $300,000 donation from Teck, $250,000 from Columbia Basin Trust and over $1 million from the province.

The grand opening event will go from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The whole community is invited out and there will be a ceremony, barbeque, family activities and speeches.
