BCHL announces roster rules for upcoming season.

The BC Hockey League has announced its roster rules now that the league is independent of Hockey Canada.

Teams will have a maximum of 25 active roster spots plus an extra spot if teams choose to have three goalies.

For Canadian teams, five players have to be from B.C. This includes players born in the province or developed in the B.C. youth system for at least three of the past five years.

At least 13 players need to be Canadian.

U.S. teams need to have five players from their regions and at least 13 American players.

There is a maximum of two players not from North America. Russian and Belarussian players are temporarily not allowed.

“During this process, it has always been extremely important to us to maintain our connection with young athletes in British Columbia and to continue prioritizing their development,” said BCHL Commissioner Steven Cocker in a release.

“We committed to keeping the same roster minimums around B.C. based players and to strengthen the definition of who qualifies as a homegrown player. We are excited to open up our rosters to 16 and 17-year-olds from out of province, as well as international athletes, but the BCHL will always remain committed to B.C. born and raised players.”
