Kimberley council walks back amendment to require Step Four of Energy Step Code

After approving an amendment that would require building permits issued after Jan. 1, 2024, to meet Step Four of the Energy Step Code, Kimberley city council has walked back the decision.

The amendment was brought back by Kevin Dunnebacke for reconsideration.

A council member that voted on the prevailing side of a motion can ask for it to come back for reconsideration.

He was concerned about the cost impacts it could have on builders.

“We’re always talking about affordable housing and to put the pressure on to move to Step 4 being over four years ahead of what the province is asking, I feel it’s putting undue stress on everybody. It’s going to put stress on young people trying to build and builders trying to build on a budget.”

Council ended up voting against the bylaw so it is no longer approved and will go back to the drawing board.

More information on the proposed bylaw can be found below.
