Serious accident closes Highway 3 east of Cranbrook

Update (12:10 p.m.):

Cranbrook RCMP and BC Highway Patrol are on the scene investigating the fatal collision.

The crash involves two passenger vehicles and one commercial vehicle.

There is no word yet on the exact number of fatalities.

A detour has opened up to allow traffic through the area.

Original Story (9:47 a.m.):

Highway 3 east of Cranbrook is closed to traffic due to what police are calling a serious accident.

STARS Air Ambulance has been dispatched to the area in response to the incident.

Cranbrook RCMP officials said it happened just east of the Rampart rest area.

According to Mainroad officials, the accident involved multiple vehicles.

Drive BC officials said there is no detour available for now.

The accident happened at about 7 a.m. on Thursday.
