Self-fill sandbag stations open across East Kooteany

Self-fill sandbag stations have opened up across the region as the East Kootenay remains under a flood watch, with recent high temperatures and rain in the forecast.

The Regional District of East Kootenay and the City of Cranbrook are asking residents in flood-prone areas to prepare in advance.

Sandbag stations have been set up at the following locations:

  • Fairmont Hot Springs Road – behind the old barn at Mountainside Golf Course.
  • Windermere Fire Hall – 1635 Highway 93/95
  • Elk River Inn in Hosmer – Highway 3 at 6th Avenue (in the lot south of the pub)
  • Cranbrook’s Public Works Yard – Cobham Avenue
  • This list will be updated if more locations are opened.

Bags and sand will be supplied, but you are encouraged to bring your own shovel and gloves.

As of Friday morning, the East Kootenay is still under a flood watch, which was issued by the BC River Forecast Centre.

Water levels are expected to continue rising under current conditions, and the RDEK said you should take steps to prepare for flooding and stay safe while recreating.

“This time of year, preparedness and safety are key,” said RDEK information officer Loree Duczek. “Know the numbers to call, have a family emergency plan, plan ahead to protect your property from flooding if you are in low-lying areas, and ensure you stay well back from waterways as rapid, unpredictable changes in waterways are possible.”

RDEK officials said you can also sign up for the regional Evacuation Notification System, which will notify you if your area is under an evacuation alert or order
