Cranbrook opens applications for rain barrel rebate program

Cranbrook residents looking to add a rain barrel to their property can apply to get a little bit of money back from the city.

City officials said 100 rebates of $50 each are up for grabs, with a maximum of one rebate per household.

Additionally, applying does not guarantee you will get a rebate, as they are processed on a first-come-first-serve basis.

City officials said more residents with rain barrels will help ease some pressure off the municipal water supply.

“Easy to install and usually inexpensive, rain barrels are an excellent way to conserve our drinking water supply,” said city staff. “During the peak of summer, when water demand is highest and supply is the lowest, this collected water can be used for outdoor irrigation, reducing the need to use treated water from the tap.”

According to city staff, collecting rainwater can also be beneficial to more than just the local water supply.

“Rainwater is naturally soft and free of minerals, making it better for plants and soil,” said the city. “Collecting rainwater with a rain barrel also reduces the amount of storm water run-off, preventing erosion and preserving creek health.”

Collected rainwater can also ensure you have your own water supply during a drought or when water restrictions are in effect.

However, city officials recommend against drinking collected rainwater, as it is untreated and non-potable.

There are a few qualifications you must pass to get the rebate.

“You must be an owner of an existing residential building located with a valid occupancy permit located within the municipal boundaries of the City of Cranbrook and connected to the City of Cranbrook water systems,” said city staff. “Only valid applications of rain barrels purchased on or after January 1, 2023, will be accepted.”

A photo of the rain barrel and the original receipt must be included.

You can send your application to City Hall at 40 – 10th Avenue South, Cranbrook BC, V1C 2M8 or drop it off yourself. Copies of all the necessary information can also be emailed to [email protected].
