One person killed in Lake Louise avalanche

An avalanche claimed the life of a skier from Alberta in a closed-off area within Lake Louise ski resort on Saturday.

Avalanche Canada said two people were caught up in the slide, one was partially buried and survived, but another was fully buried.

Lake Louise Resort officials said they were called about the incident at 2:20 p.m.

The incident happened in the West Bowl, an area that was closed at the time.

Both Parks Canada and emergency medical services were called in, with an avalanche rescue team dispatched to the area.

“Upon arriving on scene it was determined that a group of three entered the closed area and triggered a size 3 avalanche,” said resort officials. “None of the individuals were wearing avalanche safety equipment. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.”

This was the 14th avalanche fatality in B.C. this season.
