Construction season set to pick up in Elkford

Construction crews are gearing up for a busy season in Elkford, and work is expected to have an impact on traffic.

District officials said the work will focus on the downtown area, as contractors will be working to install a new curb, sidewalk, trail, asphalt, water and sewer mains, storm sewer and street lighting.

Mayor Steve Fairbairn said he’s glad to see this project become a reality.

“It’s really exciting to see the end in sight. The realignment of all the roads, curbs and sidewalks which all support the Downtown Revitalization Plan,” said Fairbairn. “At the same time, we’re getting some serious interest in it. It’ll be a big visual improvement.”

The mayor notes that some of this work is overdue.

“It puts to rest concerns we’ve had over the state of our underground services for the last 50 years,” said Fairbairn. “It’s great and it aligns well with the beginning of the Senior’s housing build.”

Elkford staff notes that some traffic control will be in place along Alpine Way from Highway 43 to Fording Drive, Boivin Road and Fording Drive from Alpine Way to the Boivin Creek bridge.

“We ask that you watch for posted signage, abide by speed limits and the directions of crews and use the detours provided,” said District staff. “To avoid delays and limit traffic congestion, consider using alternate routes whenever possible to reach your destinations.”

The contractor, Copcan Civil LP, will have multiple crews active and may occasionally close the roads to all but local traffic.

This work is part of Elkford’s Downtown Core Plan, which was adopted by District council in 2021.

Work on this project is expected to wrap up in late October.
