One person killed in avalanche near Invermere

A snowmobiler was killed when they were caught in an avalanche on Saturday near Invermere.

Avalanche Canada officials said three people were snowmobiling in the Thunderwater Lake area when the slide was triggered.

Two riders were caught in the avalanche, but one managed to escape while the other was buried about two metres deep.

“The subject was located and extricated by their party and CPR was initiated,” said Avalanche Canada officials. “Search and Rescue responded and evacuated the subject via helicopter to BC Ambulance Service in Invermere.”

Despite these efforts, the victim did not survive.

This was the 14th avalanche death in B.C. this year.

Avalanche Canada said the treacherous conditions are likely going to stick around for the rest of the season.

“With new snow on the way for the coast and interior regions, we’re expecting that avalanche danger will remain elevated, ” said Avalanche Canada officials. “If you are planning to travel in the mountains, be sure to check your avalanche forecast carefully and plan objectives to match the complicated conditions.
