Mayor glad to see regional hub for addressing violent repeat offenders

Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Price is glad to see the province set up a hub for police, prosecutors and probation officers set up in the community.

Price said the initial announcement was a pleasant surprise.

“I think it’s a very good first step. We recognize that most communities around Canada have a crime issue that has been ongoing,” said Price. “Dealing with public safety is a primary concern, and dealing with repeat violent offenders is a good step.”

Price said violent crime is not as big of an issue in Cranbrook as it may be in a larger city.

“We don’t see as much of the violent offenders as you see in the lower mainland or on the island,” said Price. “It’s a little bit more prominent there, but we do have our share in the area, so we certainly welcome being the hub.”

The mayor said the announcement shows that the provincial government is taking action.

“They put forward the resources on this, they have funding for three years on this project,” said Price. “Just with the very nature of designating those kinds of resources, it appears they’re going to be taking action.”
