Canal Flats public works crews improve road, water and wastewater training

Canal Flats public works employees will better manage roads, water and wastewater management thanks to recently completed improved training.

Village officials said Sjac Pronk, Public Works Foreman completed the Water Distribution Level 2 course.

“The course covers topics like water systems from wells, reservoirs, piping, pumps, valving and disinfection procedures as well as regulations and guidelines for operating the village’s water system,” said Village staff.

Meanwhile, Operator Doug Cartwright took a leak detection course.

“Being able to quickly identify leaks could save the village from major incidents in the future,” said Canal Flats officials.

The course teaches how to better find leaks in water system infrastructure.

On top of that, a new staff member also went through a training program.

“Labourer Shaun Kehler completed an airbrake endorsement which will allow him to operate the village’s dump/plow truck, key as we enter winter and more snow will accumulate,” said officials.

The village said the kinds of training its workers went through is important to complete the required ongoing education through the Environmental Operators Certification Program to maintain their water and wastewater certifications.
