Elk Valley RCMP investigating vehicle theft

Elk Valley RCMP is looking for witnesses with more details regarding a recent vehicle theft.

Police officials said officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle from the 7-11 in Fernie.

The caller left his vehicle running while he went inside for a coffee, and the vehicle was gone by the time he left the store.

RCMP was able to find the red 1998 Ford Expedition travelling to Sparwood, but it did not stop for police.

The driver changed directions a few times before stopping at the Hosmer Fire Hall.

A man was seen leaving the driver’s side, while a woman got out from the passenger side while police officers watched from an unmarked vehicle.

“Within 20 minutes an unmarked grey van was observed picking up the man and woman from the Hosmer Inn. The van headed southbound toward Fernie,” said Elk Valley RCMP officials.

Police were able to stop the van and arrested a 35-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman without incident.

The can driver was found to be unconnected to the incident and cooperated with investigators.

Elk Valley RCMP officials said most of the investigation was done quickly with help from the Forensic and Police Dog Service teams.

The man remains in custody and is due to appear in court while the woman was given a release order.

Police have released limited details about the suspects, as the investigation is ongoing.

“While charges have been approved, the totality of the event has not been properly assessed by BC Crown Counsel, so the suspect names will not be released by Police until further charge assessment is completed,” said RCMP officials.

Police are asking anyone with details to contact Elk Valley RCMP at 250-425-6233 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).
