Lightning strikes sparks three wildfires in the East Kootenay

Three new lightning-caused wildfires were discovered in the East Kootenay over the August long weekend, with the largest being about 40 hectares as of Tuesday morning.

East of Moyie, a fire burning at about 15 hectares in size was found in the Connell Ridge area on Monday.

Northwest of Kimberley, near the Stair Lakes, a 40-hectare fire is burning out of control. The blaze was first reported to the BC Wildfire Services on Sunday.

Farther north, a three-hectare fire is out of control near Mount Docking, east of Radium Hot Springs. It was first spotted on Saturday.

Three other fires are burning in the East Kootenay, each of them is under control and has not grown over 0.5 hectares.
