One person hospitalized following Thursday shooting

One person is in the hospital and another has been arrested after a shooting incident in Cranbrook.

Cranbrook RCMP said officers responded to a call about shots being fired in the 400-block of King Street just after 8 p.m. on Thursday.

At the scene, police found a 40-year-old woman bleeding from a gunshot wound. The woman’s friends were attempting to stop the bleeding.

Officials said she was taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police shut down the area after they learned of the suspected shooter’s identity.

The suspect later came forward to police, and he was arrested without incident.

“With the help of outlying RCMP detachments the local Police Dog Service and our drone operator, Cranbrook members were able to quickly take the man into custody and locate the suspect weapon,” said Cst Katie Forgeron. “We are asking anyone who might have any information with regard to this incident to please contact our office at 250-489-3471.”

Charges are pending and the 39-year-old man remains in custody as the investigation and charge assessment by the BC Prosecution Service continues.
