Last week, Kimberley RCMP worked overtime to catch a suspect involved in a reported theft after he evaded police twice.
Police said a large amount of copper wire, along with some tools were stolen, in hopes to turn the wire around for a quick sale.
Police received reports on Tuesday, October 15, 2019, and video surveillance footage showed two men and a white truck. They spotted the vehicle later on the same day, but the suspect fled when police tried to stop it.
RCMP Sergent Chris Newel said a tip from the public helped them locate where the suspect was on October 16.
“At that point, we were able to determine possibly where the suspect was residing, We set up on it and tried to stop that vehicle when it left, and again it fled police officers,” said Newel. “We did not pursue the vehicle on either occasion for safety concerns.”
Newel went on to say that later in the day, the 26-year-old suspect was apprehended without incident. Police believe they found evidence of stolen property when they seized and searched the vehicle.
The subject was then brought before court on the 18th, and search warrants were given to the police.
“Those three warrants have all been executed and we obtained evidence to further support the possession of stolen property, along with failing to comply with his probation and possion of ammunition while being prohibited,” said Newel.
Newel also added that the suspect will be facing additional charges on the following Monday, October 21, 2019.
Sgt. Newel commended the work RCMP officers put into the investigation.
“Their dedication to making our community safer needs to be recognized, and they really put in a lot of work,” Newel said.
