Cyclist hospitalized after being struck by suspected impaired driver

A cyclist was left hospitalized with severe injuries after he was struck by a suspected impaired driver just outside of Fernie.

Elk Valley RCMP officials said police responded to calls of an erratic driver who nearly struck pedestrians in the Kikkoman Provincial Park area at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

Officers patrolling the area spotted the vehicle heading east on Highway 3, just outside of Fernie.

According to police, the driver struck a cyclist before the officer was able to stop the vehicle.

The on-site officer administered first-aid to the severely injured cyclist while waiting for Emergency Health Services to arrive.

He was taken to the Elk Valley Hospital before being transported by STARS Air Ambulance for further treatment in Calgary.

Police officials said the driver was arrested for impaired driving, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
