Fernie Search and Rescue safely located a young man and his 81-year-old grandmother after they were declared missing around midnight on Sunday.
Tasked by Elk Valley RCMP to locate the pair, Fernie SAR said they had both left Fernie around noon on Sunday to go and recover a vehicle that had run out of gas out towards the Flathead. The two had abandoned their hunting trip the previous day as a result.
Fernie SAR and Sparwood SAR based their search on the pair’s hunting trip itinerary, as they looked on backcountry roads with friends and family members before both were eventually located.
The two were found safe and sound around 3:00 am on Sunday, just a few hours after they were declared missing.
