Trap laid in response to aggressive bear near Fernie school

A live trap has been laid for an aggressive bear that was spotted behind Fernie’s Max Turyk elementary school.

City of Fernie officials said bylaw services, conservation officers and WildSafeBC are working together to respond to the animal.

The public is asked to keep clear of the area for the time being.

“Please remember that there are a lot of hungry bears out right now looking for food,” said city officials. “It is important that all attractants are secured to reduce conflict with bears.”

City staff said Fernie’s waste regulation bylaw prohibits garbage cans from being placed out before 5 a.m. on collection day.

“Bylaw Services will be issuing tickets to homeowners that are not adhering to these regulations,” said city officials.
