RDEK Continues Solid Waste Management Plan Consultation

Three open houses have been scheduled as the Regional District of East Kootenay continues their public consultations on their Solid Waste Management Plan, affecting all aspects of waste and recycling in the region.

The Draft Solid Waste Management Plan has been available for public review since mid-July, as residents have until November 7, 2019, to provide their comments on the plan.

“We do recognize there is still a portion of the population that does not have access to computers, or that prefer face-to-face discussion, and we have scheduled an open house in each of our three subregions to provide an additional engagement opportunity for residents,” said Kevin Paterson, RDEK Environmental Services Manager.

The three open houses will be held October 22, 2019, through October 24, 2019, in Invermere, Fernie, and Cranbrook.

“The Open Houses will all have the same information, so people need only attend one if they wish,” said Paterson. “For those who are not able to attend, or who prefer to review the information online, it will continue to be available on the Solid Waste Management Plan project page on engage.rdek.bc.ca.”

All three open houses are scheduled from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and again from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with brief overviews of the Solid Waste Management Plan at 2:30 pm and 6:30 pm.

Here’s the full schedule for the open houses:

  • Invermere – Tuesday, October 22, 2019
    • Kanata Inn – 8888 Arrow Road
  • Fernie – Wednesday, October 23, 2019
    • Park Place Lodge – 742 Hwy 3
  • Cranbrook – Thursday, October 24, 2019
    • Manual Training Centre – Cranbrook Public Library – 202 Kootenay St N.

Once the consultation period comes to a close in November, the Advisory Committee and RDEK Board of Directors will consider the public feedback and finalize the Solid Waste Management Plan and sent it to the B.C. Government for final approval.
