Fernie Fire Department moves to temporary home

Fernie’s fire department has moved to a temporary location while a new facility is being designed and built.

City of Fernie officials said the move to the new location, beside the city’s Operations Facility, was completed on Sunday.

Staff said the old building has served as Fernie’s fire hall since 1979, and no longer meets the department’s needs.

“Multiple reports have highlighted that the ageing structure requires significant costly updates, and changes in fire, building and occupational health and safety regulations have resulted in the need for the immediate implementation of this interim solution,” said city officials.

The move is temporary to give designers and construction crews time to build a new facility.

City officials said the new facility will have the same operating schedule, with the building open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Burn permits will be processed through the new fire hall location, with backyard burn pit permits found at City Hall.

All phone numbers will remain the same, including 250-423-4226, the Fire Department’s non-emergency line.
