Fernie trail closed after grizzly bear attacks dog

Fernie’s Cemetary Bypass trail is closed after a grizzly bear attacked a dog along What’s Up Doc path.

City officials said the trail will be closed until at least Wednesday, at the request of the Conservation Officer Service.

“Please avoid the area, respect the signage at the trailhead and remember to be aware of the animals we share the trails with, and what to do if you encounter one while out recreating,” said City of Fernie staff.

WildSafeBC said grizzly bears are active from April to November.

Officials recommend taking bear spray, keeping pets on a leash and using caution when heading out on trails.
