Fernie Aquatic Centre Vandalized

The Fernie Aquatic Centre was severely vandalized over the Thanksgiving weekend as Elk Valley RCMP said rocks and bricks were thrown through several windows and doors.

According to Elk Valley RCMP, the vandalism occurred the night of Sunday, October 13, 2019, as they went to inspect the facility the following morning.

“Shards of glass extensively littered the interior and may have also polluted the swimming pool,” said police. “During this night, the Elk Valley RCMP Detachment were kept busy with calls regarding a reported sexual assault, a suicidal person, a weapons complaint, as well as looking for a vehicle that fled from a traffic stop.”

Elk Valley RCMP said that several people were also found in downtown Fernie carrying open liquor, resulting in a $368 fine under the Liquor Control Act. Although not directly connected, RCMP said they are investigating the vandalism and are looking for any and all information that may prove relevant.
