A continuing problem with vandalism has led to the closure of the public washrooms near Sparwood’s Spray Park.
District of Sparwood officials said the bathrooms will be closed for the rest of the season.
“The change tables are being broken, the doors have been ripped off some of the stalls, the sinks have been ripped off the walls and the toilets themselves have been damaged,” said Sparwood Mayor David Wilks. “This is becoming a costly venture for the District of Sparwood, so unfortunately we have to punish everyone for the bad behaviour of a few.”
Wilks estimates the cost of the damage to be in the thousands.
“It’s not simple to be continually replacing these things. We wish that those who are doing this would go find something more constructive to do,” said Wilks.
District staff is looking into more stringent security to counter ongoing vandalism.
“Mayor and Council directed staff to look into cameras to be placed in certain areas around town to watch for vandalism,” explained Wilks. “We had cameras up before many years ago, but the advance of technology has made for much better cameras at night.”
According to District officials, Sparwood’s Fire Department had also received several reports of young people creating small fires and burning on trails and in public areas.
“Youth are reminded that this type of behaviour can carry significant consequences. It is important to hold each other accountable, keeping our amenities open and our community safe,” said Sparwood staff.
Residents can report any vandalism or suspicious activity to the Sparwood Bylaw Enforcement Office or the RCMP
