Wildlife Groups Hosting “B.C. Goes Wild” Weekend in Kimberley

WildSafeBC is hosting “B.C. Goes Wild” in Kimberley this weekend, an event that revolves around wilderness awareness and how to limit human-wildlife encounters.

Joining forces with Wildsight and Jillian Saunders of Grizzly Bear Coexistence Solutions, the event will begin at 11:00 am on Sunday, September 22, 2019.

Being held at Wildsight’s Community Garden on Rotary Drive just south of the Kimberley Aquatic Centre, there will be a variety of activities and events for the public to participate and learn about wildlife.

“There’s an electric fencing demonstration, followed up by a bear spray demonstration,” said Danica Roussy, WildSafeBC Cranbook-Kimberley Community Coordinator.

Roussy said Saunder will lead the electric fencing demonstration at 11:00 am before she does the bear spray demonstration at 12:00 pm, to help educate the public on human-bear encounters and how to limit any conflicts.

“Then at 1:00 pm, we have Wildsight’s Harvest Party, so pressing and picking apples and putting that work to use by making apple juice and apple sauce.”

Seeing as apples are one of the number on attractants to bears in East Kootenay communities, Roussy said its a perfect way to limit attractants and get the community involved.

Meant for all ages, everyone can attend, although Roussy asks that dogs be left at home due to the bear spray demonstration due to their sensitivity to the spray.

The event gets underway at 11:00 am on Sunday at the Wildsight Community Garden in Kimberley.
