East Kootenay Students Striking Friday for Climate Change

A global climate change strike is seeing high school students step up and walk out of school on Friday, making their voices heard and making their thoughts known about the issue.

On Thursday, students from Cranbrook’s Mount Baker Secondary School walked out of class and peacefully protested around the school and at Cranbrook City Hall.

Masha Spich, a grade 11 student from David Thompson spoke to MyEastKootenayNot.com about their plans for their protest, which begin at 11:00 am at the Invermere Cenotaph.

“At 12:00 pm there will be a few speakers from people that have their ideas to share about climate action and then after that there will be a little bit of music by a local band and we’ll have petitions around for people to sign and a poster for people to write their ideas on,” said Spich. “Then we will be walking to the District of Invermere office and handing off the petition.”

Spich believes that it’s their time to speak up about the issue of climate change and demand action.

“We think that this is our future, so we should be taking control and this is our way of expressing it,” said Spich. “I think that our number one priority is definitely to get the attention of our local politicians and local governments and one of the big things is for our local government to declare a climate emergency.”

Students in Golden and Nelson are also holding their own strikes on Friday as part of the global movement.
