Cranbrook Aquatic Centre to Remain Closed Into October

The Aquatic Centre at Western Financial Place will remain closed indefinitely due to ongoing repairs to the facility’s roof, budgeted at $1.72 million.

After meeting with New Dawn Developments on Thursday and getting a look at the full construction schedule, the pool is anticipated to remain closed until October 15th.

All swimming lessons and classes have since been cancelled as a result.

“Aquatic staff will be notifying families and stakeholders that are affected by this pool closure,” said the City of Cranbrook. “We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience during construction.”

Paul Heywood, Acting Director of Community Services told MyEastKootenayNow.com on Monday hat they were optimistic they would be able to open the Aquatic Centre periodically as it fit with the construction schedule.

“We’re going to have to make an assessment as to how many construction crew members are up on that roof, the scale of the work that they’re doing and the impact that that’s going to have inside,” said Heywood on Monday. “I think we’re going to be a lot more conscious of what is happening and we’re going to have to make a lot more difficult decisions as to whether the Aquatic Centre will be open this fall.”

Construction to repair the roof above the Aquatic Centre, Western Financial Place lobby, and old Kootenay Ice offices began on September 3, 2019. While crews were working on the roof, loose materials from the ceiling were falling into the pool, forcing the City of Cranbrook to close the facility to meet public safety standards.
