The Kimberley Transfer Station will begin accepting garbage again on Monday as construction is nearing completion after the building was destroyed in a fire last year.
“Getting the main building re-opened to the public has been our goal all along and it feels great to be at the point in the reconstruction process that we can do that,” said Kevin Paterson, RDEK Environmental Services Manager. “Our contractor will remain on-site to complete construction on the adjoining staff facilities; however, that will not impact the public access to the site.”
Just over a year ago, the Kimberley Transfer Station was destroyed in a fire. Since then, temporary bins have been installed outside the facility where only small loads of garbage have been accepted.
For the City of Kimberley, all municipal trucks and larger loads had to instead utilize the RDEK’s Central Landfill or the Cranbrook Transfer Station.
Now with constructing nearing its end, the public can get back into their local Transfer Station on Monday, September 16, 2019.
“We want to acknowledge and thank the public for its patience during the rebuild, the City of Kimberley staff who had to make adjustments to use other facilities, and our contractor for working as quickly as possible to complete the construction,” said Paterson.
Construction crews will continue the final pieces of construction, but the Kimberley Transfer Station will once again open at 8:30 am on Monday for the public.
