Homes and Buildings Destroyed in Sparwood Fire

Two mobile homes, a travel trailer, and several outbuildings were destroyed in Sparwood as the result of a fire that broke out in the MountainView Trailer Court Wednesday afternoon.

Sparwood Mayor David Wilks confirmed the details of the fire.

“There are some other mobile homes with smoke damage,” said Wilks. “A big shout out to the Sparwood Fire Department for their speedy response to this incident and a big thank you to the Elkford Fire Department for coming down to Sparwood to cover our area while this incident unfolded.”

The responding firefighters were eventually able to get the blaze under control, while Highway 3 was closed through Sparwood as crews responded to the fire.

One eye witness spoke to MyEastKootenayNow.com about the incident.

There was so much talk about bears being around and I could hear a couple of shots and I thought, oh goodness, somebody must have probably shot a bear. I looked through a window and, all full of smoke, this was all happening before I knew it,” said the eye witness.

“There was a lot of smoke, there was three firetrucks down here and an ambulance come down.”

At this time, it is unclear what may have caused the fire as details of the blaze are still emerging.
