Kimberley Recognized for Committment to Climate Action

The City of Kimberley has been awarded Level 3 recognition by the Provincial Green Communities Committee (GCC) for their community-wide climate actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Previously receiving Level 1 and Level 2 status, the City of Kimberley was yet again recognized for “Accelerating Progress on Charter
Commitments” by the GCC, a committee formed by both the B.C. Government and the Union of B.C. Municipalities.

“By signing the Climate Action Charter, the City has made a commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions,” said Scott Sommerville, City Chief Administrative Officer. “This is important work and while accolades are always great to receive, we have even more work to do to meet our goals.”

As per the City of Kimberley’s Official Community Plan, the municipality is seeking to reduce corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 33% by the end of 2020, from their baseline in 2007. Kimberley also wants to reduce community GHG emissions by 6% over that same time span.

In 2018, the City of Kimberley had 1,184 tCO2e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent), which was a 5.4% drop from 2017, and a total 21.6% reduction from their 2007 baseline. That still leaves an 11.4% gap as to where the City hopes to be by the end of 2020.

Through their efforts to reduce GHG emissions, the GCC congratulated Mayor Don McCormick and Kimberley City Council in a letter, applauding their “leadership in their ongoing commitment to the goal of carbon neutrality”.
