Update (10:30 am):
Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services (CFES) received a call after an “unidentified powder” was reported at the Canada Post office downtown.
As a precaution, 1st Street South between 9th and 10th Avenue South was closed by emergency responders Monday morning.
“Fire personnel responded to the scene, secured the area, and proceeded to investigate the cause of the incident,” said the City of Cranbrook.
At the scene, firefighters determined the substance was harmless and Canada Post’s operations were able to resume without a hitch.
“We thank the public for respecting our need to create safe workspaces at emergency incidents. In addition, the Fire Department commends the staff at Canada Post for their safe and effective response to a potentially hazardous situation,” said Scott Driver, Director of CFES. “Their safe and effective approach to these potentially harmful incidents makes for a safer community for all of us.”
There is no further cause for concern, the road has reopened, and Canada Post is back to its routine operations.

Cranbrook firefighters are responding to an incident at the intersection of 10th Avenue South and 1st Street South.
There are limited details at this time, but the road closure is adjacent to the Post Office.
The City of Cranbrook said members of Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services are “on scene working” in the area.
Any and all motorists are asked to avoid the area while firefighters respond.
